Save Our Water Day - Sept. 1

State Fair Kicks Off Friday – ‘Save Our Water Day’ is Sept. 1
http://www.acwa.com/eNewsletter/article_images/8_400447194097222.jpgThe California State Fair opens Friday in Sacramento, and the “Save Our Water” public education program will play a starring role at the Department of Water Resources’ 4,000-foot exhibit.

Located inside County Building B, the exhibit will feature colorful panels explaining California’s water supply, history and challenges and interactive games and activities for children. Several ACWA member agencies will be making kid-friendly presentations at the exhibit, including El Dorado Irrigation District, Municipal Water District of Orange County and Regional Water Authority.

In addition, Sept. 1 is “Save Our Water Day” at the fair. The day will include giveaways to the first 1,000 families through the gates, performances by Radio Disney, and a special “Passport to Water Savings” activity for children. The fair runs Aug. 21 through Sept. 7.

Poway council adopts new water-rate scale

August 19, 2009

POWAY: New, controversial water rates that penalize large residential users via an escalating scale were approved last night by the Poway City Council.

About 100 residents from northern Poway, many of whom live on large lots and use much more water than the average resident, complained about the new rate structure at last night's council meeting. The council passed the ordinance 3-2, saying it was the best way to encourage conservation. Council members Carl Kruse and Betty Rexford voted “no.”

Opponents said the new rates are unfair to people who own large, heavily landscaped properties because they will have to pay substantially more for water, even if they cut back.

Poway is unique in the county because 10 percent of the residential customers use 40 percent of all the water in the city.

The top 5 percent use 25 percent of all the water.

The new rates will go into effect Sept. 1 and will rise again in the spring.

The council promised to keep looking at water rate issues and suggested that the situation could change next year.

General Information

Heal the Bay's Beach Report Card is based on weekly water quality monitoring data provided by the City of Los Angeles' Environmental Monitoring Division, the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services and the County Sanitation Districts. Data is analyzed as soon as it is made available to us by the public agencies. The report is the only comprehensive examination of coastal water quality throughout Los Angeles County. Beaches are graded on an A-F scale based on the risk of ocean users becoming ill. Samples are analyzed for bacteria--enterococcus, total and fecal coliforms--that indicate biological pollution. Grading methodology information used in determining grades for each location is available from the office or on our web site. The report is not designed to measure the amount of trash or toxins found at local beaches.

Grades for this report are based on monitoring data from the previous four weeks up to the ending date on the masthead.

Heal the Bay reminds you not to swim or surf within 100 yards of any flowing storm drain and for 3 days after a rainstorm. After a rain, indicator bacteria counts at beaches throughout Southern California usually far exceed health criteria in the state's Beach Closure and Health Warning Protocol.

Heal the Bay is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to making Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, including Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy and clean. We use research, education, community action and advocacy to pursue our mission.
